Richard Lariviere

Richard Lariviere became the President and CEO of the Field Museum of Natural History in 2012. His career in academia and business is grounded in his expertise on India. An early participant in the IT industry in India, his work extended to the cable TV industry, financial services, insurance, and other industries. The success of the joint ventures in which he was involved led to extensive consulting work. He was the independent Board member of the HCL- Perot Systems joint venture and on the Board of Directors of EMR Corporation (now Silverskills India). Among the companies Dr. Lariviere has worked with are Deluxe Corporation, General Instrument Corporation (now part of Motorola), Cisco Systems, Sabre Holdings, HCL Corporation, Perot Systems, MetLife, Telular, and others. His work takes him to India and Europe annually.

An expert on the Indian legal system, fluent in French, Hindi, and Sanskrit. Dr. Lariviere is also a prize-winning author of many books and articles on Indian law and culture. He was a professor and dean of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin, provost and executive vice-chancellor at the University of Kansas, and president of the University of Oregon.

He has a BA from the University of Iowa and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a Fellow of the IC2 Institute, Founding Member of the Institute for Design and Process Science, Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain, a Life Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a Fellow of the American Oriental Society. He is a member of The Chicago Club, The Arts Club, and The Economic Club.
